Hersey debaters make statement at recent invitational

The John Hersey High School Congressional Debate Team fared well at the Schaumburg High School Invitational Tournament on Jan. 16, as senior Sarah Prostko captured the Top Quality speaker award. The highest quality speaker is determined by averaging all the students' scores for the entire contest. Prostko averaged 5.83 out of a possible 6 points.

Also gaining awards for the Critics Choice was junior Ted Schwaba for his first trophy of the season. Senior Mike Xiang won his third consecutive award for Best Presiding Officer. Sophomore Moriah Mulroe won a 2nd place speaker trophy. Schwaba and Mulroe teamed up to win a 2nd place trophy for Best Legislation, "A Bill to Prevent Cyberterrorism."

The team, coached by John Stanislaw, Kent Manthey and Denny McSherry, finished 5th place overall.
