Your news: Golf outing a success for Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities' Northwest Senior Services Regional Office heartily welcomed golfers and sponsors to its inaugural golf outing recently at the Schaumburg Golf Club, known for its challenging links-style golf.

This successful event will greatly support CCNWSS programs.

Some of the unique raffle prizes which were won included four individual chances to play a round of golf with former Cubs catcher Randy Hundley at the prestigious Lake Barrington Shores Golf Club including a mini-lesson from a Lake Barrington Shores Golf Club professional.

CCNWSS gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the event sponsors: The Duchossois Family Foundation, Northwest Community Hospital, Ultra Home Health Care, Motor Werks of Barrington, Affinity Marketing, Alexian Brothers Hospital Network, Allied Air Conditioning & Heating of Palatine, The Garlands of Barrington, Mary and Tom Insprucker, Maryville-Scott Nolan Center, and Patty O'Brien.

CCNWSS's mission is based on the foundation of individual dignity and worth, quality of life, self-determination, and personal choice.

Supportive services like Meals on Wheels, advocacy and homemaking/chore assistance are provided to help seniors maintain their independence and prevent premature nursing home placement. Social, educational and volunteer activities at the CCNWSS add to seniors' quality of life.

With the current increased sensitivity for veterans, Romeo Mura, Catholic Charities Advisory Board member and chairman for this inaugural golf event, along with co-chairmen Jim Thompson of Lake Barrington and Norm Malcolm of Palatine, researched the percentage of the seniors who are veterans living in the United States.

“Per the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S.A. senior population (60 years or older) living in the U.S.A. is 52.5 million. From World War II to the Vietnam War, there are 19.2 million men and woman of the 52.5 million who have been in the armed services. Thus, at least 33 percent of our seniors served in our military from World War II to the Vietnam War. Catholic Charities does not keep this type of data on the seniors we serve in our Senior Services Program, but I feel many of the seniors we serve are men and woman who are veterans, their spouses, widows or widowers and who also serviced during peace times,” said Romeo Mura.
