Wheeling motors ahead, makes sectional final

The Mid-Suburban League boys soccer champs have earned another road trip to Evanston.

Wheeling advanced in the Class 3A boys soccer playoffs by edging New Trier 1-0 on Tuesday night in sectional semifinal play at Evanston.

The Wildcats (20-1-2) will compete in Saturday’s sectional championship game against the host Wildkits at Lazier Field. The start time for that contest has been moved to 3 p.m.

Evanston advanced by edging Maine South 2-1 in Tuesday’s earlier semifinal.

After a scoreless first half, Wheeling’s Ivan Mancilla had the game’s only goal with an assist from Jose Garcia.

Wildcats goalkeeper Gary Mendoza made 8 saves to earn the shutout.
