Bring your old shoes to coed soccer tourney
A coed soccer tournament, organized by the charity Stuff for the Poor, will collect used shoes to help children in need overseas.
The tournament begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Benedictine University’s Sports Complex, 5700 College Road, Lisle. Used shoes of any type and size will be collected.
Stuff for the Poor sells the shoes to an African buyer and uses the funds to pay for the education of orphans in villages in Uganda and Haiti. The shoes are resold in Africa to provide affordable footwear for the middle class.
The tournament will include three divisions: junior high, high school, and adult. The top three teams in each division will receive awards.
The entry fee is $10 per player and at least one pair of shoes. Register at stuffforthepoor.org by Sept. 19. Spectators also are asked to donate at least one pair of shoes.
All players must have shin guards. Teams must have six players, including a goalie and a minimum of two female players on the field at all times, but may have as many substitutes as they like.
