Palatine Library celebrates 20 years

The Palatine Public Library District is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the main library’s location at 700 N. North Court this year. To commemorate this anniversary, join the library on Saturday, Sept. 21, and Sunday, Sept. 22, for a special weekend full of creative learning, inspiring music, food, and games.

Bring the family on Saturday for an afternoon of yo-yo fun, listening to acoustic guitar, and visiting some booths on the second floor. Grab a ticket for one of two shows (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) featuring Duncan Yo-Yo Champion, Barry North as he captivates children of all ages with yo-yo tricks and how-to instructions. Award-winning singer/songwriter Jim Green visits throughout the afternoon playing percussive rhythms, harmonics, and double pull-offs on his guitar. Come to one of many booths on the second floor between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and learn about Zentangle, bicycle tips, make a recycled book craft, and sample a variety of cheeses from Whole Foods Market, Kildeer.

On Sunday from 2-3:15 p.m., experience a real treat with Palatine’s own, the Ploughboys, as they entertain with their unique combination of traditional Irish folk music and high energy songs.

As part of the celebration, you may have a chance to become the lucky winner of a Google Nexus 7 tablet or other prizes! Valid district cardholders who attend any of these weekend programs or visit a booth on the second floor may receive an entry to fill out and enter into a drawing to win a prize. Winners will be announced by Monday, Sept. 23. These events and programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Palatine Library and the Palatine Public Library District Foundation.

The Main Library currently located at 700 N. North Court, Palatine, opened to the public in December 1993. This building nearly tripled in size from its earlier location on Benton Street to a 96,000 square-foot building with underground parking, and expansions in collections, programs, and services. Since then, the Library District has seen many improvements to services, updates to the building, and more places to meet and create. The district also includes two branch locations and a bookmobile that provides services to schools and designated portions of the community.

To sign up for programs, or for more information about the weekend celebration, visit www.palatinelibrary.org, or call 847-358-5881.

The Palatine Public Library District is your destination for knowledge, entertainment, and community. The district serves approximately 90,000 residents predominantly within the communities of Palatine and Hoffman Estates.
