Mt. Prospect community center hits one-year mark

The Mount Prospect Community Connections Center celebrated its anniversary with an open house Aug. 25.

When the center opened a year ago at 1711 W. Algonquin Road, its purpose was "to serve low-income, culturally and linguistically diverse, underserved areas of the village."

Here are some figures from the center's first year:

• The south branch of the Mount Prospect Public Library located in the center had 60,000 visitors who checked out 37,000 items.

• Police and human services departments worked with about 1,000 residents and had 6,300 meetings.

Looking to next year, here are some programs the center has planned:

• District 214 is offering English classes for nine weeks this fall.

• District 59 will hold prekindergarten classes in November for three weeks, offering mothers effective parenting tips.

• Elk Grove Township will have a representative at the center once a month.

• Northwest Community Hospital will hold a class on diabetes on Saturday, Sept. 11, and another class on healthy relationships Monday, Sept 20.
