Hersey club helps with Kiwanis Peanut sale

On the weekend of Sept. 23-25, the John Hersey High School Service Over Self Club (S.O.S.) continued a 40-year tradition by participating in the Kiwanis Peanuts fundraiser. The proceeds of the event will be split between Kiwanis and S.O.S., raising funds for the service projects of both organizations.

The Kiwanis Peanut fundraiser has been a beloved activity of S.O.S. for many years.

S.O.S. sponsor and Hersey teacher Mark Gunther said, “Kiwanis Peanut weekend is the foundation of the 35 Service Over Self projects we coordinate throughout the school year. This is our primary fundraiser to support these projects.”

These programs include Senior Citizens Day, Fun Olympics, and trips to Disney on Ice and the circus for students with disabilities.

Hersey student Kelly Facer commented, “Last year I helped with the Kiwanis fundraiser. It warmed my heart to see so many willing to help out our class and the community.”

This year, students collected donations and handed out peanuts at all the Jewel locations in Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove, Walgreens in Town and Country Mall, Garden Fresh in Southpoint Shopping Center and HHGregg on Rand Road.
