Shots fired during Streamwood standoff; suspect in custody
A domestic dispute led to an armed man barricading himself Tuesday night inside a Streamwood home, the second such standoff this week in the village.
The man is hospitalized and charges have yet to be filed, Streamwood Police Deputy Chief James Keegan said Wednesday afternoon.
Police retrieved several guns after the eight-hour standoff ended early Wednesday morning on the 100 block of Beverly Court. No police officers or civilians were injured, though shots were fired.
Police arrived after receiving the call at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. A woman said her husband attacked her, Keegan said in a news release. She escaped and alerted police, telling them her husband was suicidal and armed with numerous firearms.
After unsuccessful attempts to place the suspect in custody, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System was contacted for assistance, Keegan said. That's a specially-trained group of officers who are dressed in special gear.
A confrontation took place after several hours of negotiations with police, and several shots were fired by the suspect during the incident, police said.
Keegan said in the news release police officers used less-lethal police tactics to subdue the offender at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Police didn't specify what those tactics were and an e-mail from police didn't indicate if the suspect suffered injuries and needed medical treatment or it he was hospitalized for some other reason.
Several residents were displaced from their homes during the incident, the release said, and officers were required to shut down a large portion of Bartlett Road. Residents returned to their homes after the incident ended.
Police are withholding information about the suspect's identity until after charges are filed with the Cook County state's attorney's office.
This is the second standoff in Streamwood this week. In an unrelated matter, Lawrence Cattone, 44, of Marengo, surrendered to police on Monday after holding his ex-girlfriend hostage for nearly four hours on the 700 block of Stowell Place. No one was injured there either.
Cattone was charged with five felony counts including home invasion, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated unlawful restraint. He remains in jail in lieu of $350,000 bond.
