Palatine Park's inaugural Disc Golf Tournament a success

The inaugural Margreth Riemer Reservoir Open Disc Golf Tournament attracted 38 talented disc golf players from around the area including a few from out of the state. The course was recently expanded to a full 18 holes, and the tournament consisted of two rounds of play on the course. The tournament rounds were followed by a raffle drawing and the ring of fire competition for a brand new portable disc golf basket. The winner of this year's Open Division was Alan Wagner with round scores of 47 and 42. The tournament was generously sponsored by a variety of area businesses and disc golf companies, including:

Plastic Addicts Disc Golf, American Chartered Bank, Crosslap Discs, 7-11 at Palatine Road and Quentin, Walgreens at Euclid and Quentin Road, DGA, and Midwest Disc Golf.

The community is invited to play the course at Margreth Riemer. Play is free, the course is non-supervised and reservations are not needed. Players just need to bring their own disc or frisbee. Discs can be purchased here in Palatine at the 7-11 at Quentin and Palatine and at the Walgreens at Quentin and Euclid. The course is open from sunrise to dusk daily, April 15 through October 15. All 9 holes include Mach 3 baskets and tee markers with signs indicating hole location, distance, and par. A downloadable scorecard is available at www.palatineparks.org.

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc or frisbee. The disc/frisbee is thrown from a tee to a basket, which is the “hole.” As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed. Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed. The object is to throw the disc/frisbee from the tee area to the target “basket” in the fewest number of throws.
