Scouting Antioch at Vernon Hills
Antioch (4-0, 2-0) at Vernon Hills (4-0, 2-0)
When: 7:30 p.m., today
Last week: Antioch def. Grant, 49-30; Vernon Hills def. Round Lake, 60-0.
Skinny: The atmosphere should be festive at Vernon Hills. Not only is it the school's homecoming, but a playoff vibe will be in the air as the only undefeated teams in the NSC Prairie battle for supremacy in the division. Again. The last two years, the Prairie crown has gone to either Vernon Hills or Antioch. Antioch won it in 2008 and Vernon Hills won it last year. "Our kids are jacked," Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said. "They're just excited about the opportunity. There's no place they'd rather be than playing a tough, undefeated team like Vernon Hills in a playoff-type game."-Meanwhile, Vernon Hills coach Tony Monken is hoping that his players aren't too jacked. "We're just trying to get through all the distractions of homecoming week," Monken said. "There's a lot going on around here, and this is such a big game for us. We're really going to have to stay focused."-So far, the Cougars have been focused with pin-point precision on defense. No team has scored even a single point on Vernon Hills. Extending the streak to five games will be a tall order. Antioch is averaging 42 points per game and showed all kind of explosiveness in a victory over Grant last week. The Sequoits scored four first-half touchdowns but had the ball for only 4:45. The Sequoits rolled up 374 rushing yards on just 26 carries. Vinnie Holm led the way with 175 yards, while Josh Guadarrama and Sam Green added 92 and 81 yards, respectively. "We know this will be a great challenge for our defense. Their running backs are absolutely outstanding," Monken said. "There's a good chance our (shutout) streak will come to an end on Friday. But that's OK. We didn't set out to shut out nine opponents this season. We just want to win games."-Vernon Hills has won a lot of games over the last four years with DaVaris Daniels and Evan Spencer in the mix. The two highly touted senior wide receivers have played just about everywhere in the offense, from quarterback to running back to wideout, and boast 10 touchdowns each already. "Against a team like Vernon Hills, you have to be ready for anything," Glashagel said. "(Daniels and Spencer) are special football players, and Vernon Hills is getting the most out of them. By moving them all over the place, it makes it difficult to 'D' them up. But the thing about Vernon Hills is that it's not just a two-man team. They've got a lot of other guys who can hurt you."
