Boomers handle Wild Things 6-3
WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Schaumburg Boomers built a 6-0 lead and held off the Washington Wild Things 6-3 to win on the road Saturday night, stopping a brief two-game slide.
Sean Mahley, All-Star Game MVP on Wednesday at Washington, roped a triple into the right-field corner to bring home Frank Pfister with the first run in the top of the second. Mahley scored moments later on a groundout by Ty Nelson.
Schaumburg tacked on 3 unearned runs when Brian McConkey nailed a 3-run, opposite field homer in the third. McConkey would add another RBI in the sixth on a single, finishing with 4 RBI.
Washington struggled against starter Matt Kuna (4-2), who worked 6 scoreless innings, striking out four.
Washington scored 3 runs in the seventh. Dexter Price bounced back to post the save in the ninth, his sixth. Schaumburg finished with 8 hits in the game, 2 each from McConkey, Mahley and Steve McQuail. The Boomers have registered 7 or more hits 17 times in the last 20 games.
The rubber match in the series is Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Right-hander Mike Giovenco (5-4, 3.92) starts for the Boomers against lefty Zach LeBarron (3-0, 1.04).
