Boomers bash Miners before big crowd
The third-largest crowd in franchise history — 5,788 — enjoyed a 7-1 Schaumburg Boomers victory over the Southern Illinois Miners on Thursday at Boomers Stadium.
Two big innings and a dozen hits propelled the Boomers (24-19), including 3 runs in the second inning and 4 in the fourth.
The bottom five hitters in the Boomers’ order went a combined 9-for-18 and drove in all 7 runs. Ty Nelson made his fifth start in right field and went 2-for-4 with a 2-RBI triple. Alexi Colon went 2-for-3, including his fourth homer of the season.
Chicago native Mike Giovenco notched his fourth win, allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 5 innings. Relievers James Bierlein and Sean Mahley polished off the victory with 4 combined shutout innings.
The Boomers begin a three-game series when they host the River City Rascals at 6:30 p.m. today. Left-hander Danny Jimenez (2-4, 3.95) starts for the Boomers against righty Tommy Mendoza (4-3, 5.12).
