Fire truck bookshelf to help hearing impaired students
The Special Education District of Lake County Cyd Lash High School students have built, painted and provided a fire truck bookshelf for John Powers Center, a school for hearing-impaired students.
The fire truck bookshelf provides a place for the students to read or play games while waiting for school to start or for the school buses to arrive after school.
Books are found on the shelves and games are stored under one of the seats. The staff and students of John Powers are organizing a community book drive to help the Countryside Fire District fill the fire truck book shelf, which is still under construction by Cyd Lash High School wood shop students.
The Deaf Can Do It Community Day is planned for May 1 at the fire station on Deerpath Drive, south of Route 60 in Vernon Hills. The donation of books will be made to the fire district staff, followed by a fire station tour for the Powers students.
“This is an amazing partnership,” Public Education Coordinator Tony Rodkey said. “We are bringing our fire district school staff, students and the county school district together.”
The Deaf Can Do It Community Day will benefit all the children who visit the Countryside Fire District headquarters in Vernon Hills.
