Resolve to eat right, exercise all year
As we head into the New Year, it's time to start thinking about our health. In Illinois, we have our work cut out for us. A recent study showed that the Land of Lincoln ranks 29th when compared to the health of other states, and that obesity is a growing problem.
The 2010 edition of America's Health Rankings by the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association and Partnership for Prevention, revealed that obesity in Illinois has increased from 10.9 percent in 1990 to 26.8 percent in 2009.
If the obesity rate continues to rise at current levels, by 2018 Illinois is expected to spend an additional $14.78 billion, or $1,538 per adult, in health care spending.
These statistics should serve as a major warning call to Illinoisans. Here are tips to get you started.
Diet: Don't fry. Instead bake, broil, roast, boil or microwave. Choose fresh fruits and vegetables as snacks. When eating out, ask to substitute side dishes like French fries or onion rings with healthy alternatives such as a plain baked potato or unsalted vegetables. Limit the size of your portions.
Exercise: Make exercise a normal part of your day. Choose activities that are fun, not tedious. Plan family outings that involve vigorous activities such as hiking, bicycling, skiing and swimming. Join a local recreation club focused on exercise such as hiking or cycling. Get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day. Make sure to give yourself credit for activities you already do, such as climbing stairs, pushing a stroller or gardening.
