District 15 should reconsider recess

There are numerous articles in newspapers and segments in the news programs about the obesity problem in our school-age children. Warnings abound concerning proper nutrition and exercise for all citizens.

However, here in our home area, the Dist. 15 school board has decided to request a two-year extension to its current physical education waiver.

District 15 states they have a space shortage at its facilities. I have not read about the decrease in size of the multipurpose rooms/gyms in the buildings nor the reduction in the playground areas surrounding each building. Have I been missing something?

Most teachers will welcome regular-length recess periods for their students. It improves the performance of the pupils and the teachers.
