River Trails students donate quilts to Connections

Students at River Trails Middle School in Mount Prospect custom made quilts and donated them to the Mount Prospect Human Services Food Pantry. The students used fabric paints and unique designs on each square to make two bright and colorful quilts.

Victoria Bran, the Community Connections Center coordinator, accepted the donation on behalf of the village Human Services Department.

Students learned that the food pantry is stocked by donations that help individuals and families who are struggling financially. The students made the quilts as a part of their Connections class taught by teacher Susan Schnackenberg.

Connections is a 25-minute middle school advisory program that occurs at the end of each week.

“The class provides our students with strategies and tools to safely navigate the social elements of middle school,” Principal Keir Rogers said.

During Connections, students explore the concept of character action and discover ways to make healthy and meaningful connections with their peers, staff and community. The ultimate goal of Connections is to help students understand and demonstrate the three B’s: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Ready to Learn.

Lessons and activities are created and designed by staff and students. Connections groups consist of one adult and 10-12 students. The activity is an awesome demonstration of team work, collaboration and service learning.
