Celebrate classic book:The staff of the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" by encouraging people to read the book this summer. In addition, the library will host a free screening of the movie adaptation of the novel at 2 p.m. Oct. 3. The library is at 300 Olde Half Day Road. For more information, visit vapld.info.Antioch picnic and auction:The Antioch Lions Club is hosting a barbecue picnic at Williams Park in Antioch on Sunday, Aug. 1. During the picnic, the Antioch Volunteer Rescue Squad will be holding the village's largest auction of the year to raise money for their squad. The cookout will feature grilled chicken and roasted corn. There will also be swimming and children's games throughout the day.Ducky fundraiser:The annual rubber duck race to benefit the Mundelein Parks Foundation will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Barefoot Bay Family Aquatic Center, 1461 N. Midlothian Road between Route 176 and Winchester Road, Mundelein. The event is free with general admission. A rain date is scheduled for Aug. 7. Funds raised go to recreational and program scholarships at the Mundelein Park District, allowing those in financial need to enjoy a wide variety of activities for free.
