Police ID driver in DUI crash that killed Cary man

Police have identified the driver who struck a tree over the weekend in a DUI-related crash that killed a 20-year-old Cary man.

Servando Ayala, 19, of Cary was seriously injured in the crash that killed Pedro Ayala Jr., but is expected to survive and could face further charges once released from the hospital, police said.

Police responded to the one-vehicle crash on Elden Drive near Margaret Terrace at about 1 a.m. and found both occupants trapped in a 1997 Ford.

Fire department personnel extricated both occupants of the vehicle, but Pedro Ayala Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple trauma injuries, according to the McHenry County coroner’s office.

The driver, Servando Ayala, was flown via helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with severe injuries, according to police.

“I fully believe the driver is going to survive,” said Cary Police Chief Steve Casstevens Monday afternoon.

Servando Ayala has been charged with driving under the influence and was cited for a number of minor traffic offenses, Casstevens said.

Servando Ayala could face more serious charges following a full investigation by the police department and the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.
