St. Charles District 303 credit cards hacked for video gaming
Two St. Charles District 303 corporate credit cards were hacked by somebody who used them to play Xbox Live video games, according to St. Charles police.
The district filed the report Jan. 29. The purchases took place Jan. 26 to 29.
The cards were assigned to an office worker and a teacher at Haines Middle School, 305 S. Ninth St., St. Charles.
According to records from Microsoft and Mastercard, the offender provided the name “Carrie Petersen” and the Haines Middle School address on one of the cards, and used it for three charges totaling $199.97.
Four fraudulent charges, totaling $200, were made with the other card, to a business called JAXTR Inc., a California-based “social network.” That too used the Petersen name, but a different address, in the 0-100 block of South Ninth Street in St. Charles.
A teacher at Haines named Carrie Petersen is on maternity leave and does not have a district credit card.
The phone numbers listed on the gaming accounts registered to a woman in New York and a man in Louisiana, both of whom said they did not make the charges and were concerned they may be the victims of identity theft, police said.
Police were unable to access the Internet protocol IDs of the e-mail addresses given for the gaming accounts, but have requested a subpoena to get that information from Yahoo.com.
