Does market limit number of successes?

Your cover page article on May 29, “Mount Prospect helps entrepreneurs,” raises an interesting point.

As a 27-year resident, I have a long-standing observation of restaurants and downtown Mount Prospect. If a new one comes, someone is going to go.

There seems to be a finite number of eateries that downtown can support. Instead of more establishments creating a “critical mass” that attracts more people, it just seems to create another slice in a same-sized pie.

The article mentions two recent arrivals in town — CravePizza and Emerson’s Ale House. Both are in locations of previous closures. (As is the new Mount Prospect State Bank facility.)

I wish Mia’s Cantina the best of luck, but past experience will predict that someone else will fail. I realize this is the market sorting out the winners and losers as people vote for their favorite restaurant with their patronage. But sometimes I wonder if the village should recognize that there seems to be a limit to what the market will support.
