Pokemon contest in Huntley draws crowd
About 60 Pokémon Trading Card Game players from Huntley and surrounding areas competed in an all day Pokémon City Championship Saturday at the Huntley Park District in Huntley.
Players from three age divisions competed to earn valuable championship points that count toward a potential invitation to compete at the 2014 Pokémon World Championships in Washington, D.C., next summer.
Huntley organizer Jimmy Ballard of Plainfield said the competition is like playing chess with cards and requires constant thinking.
“The event gets the kids out to meet other competitors and out from playing electronic games in their basements,” said Ballard.
More than 100 Pokémon City Championships are taking place throughout North America Nov. 23 through Jan. 6.
Players of all ages and skill levels competed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Huntley as their supporters and Pokémon fans watched.
Samuel Bruce, 9, of Mundelein, sitting directly across from and competing with Easton Ours, 8, of Naperville, said the best part is making a good deck to battle other players.
“It is just fun to meet new friends with different personalities,” Bruce said.
