Hales Franciscan shoots down Mundelein
The Whitney Young Shootout lived up to its name for the Mundelein and Hales Franciscan boys basketball teams Saturday.
Robert Knar scored a game-high 34 points (four 3-pointers) for Mundelein, but the Mustangs lost 97-85.
Eddie Alcantara and Larry Kuykendoll led Hales Franciscan with 27 and 20 points, respectively. Niji Lomax sank four 3s and scored 14 points. The Spartans trailed 17-7 after one quarter but outscored the Mustangs 39-21 in the second to lead 46-38 at halftime.
Nate Williams added 15 points for Mundelein (17-4), which saw its nine-game winning streak halted, while Cliff Dunigan had 12. Sean O’Brien chipped in 9 for the Mustangs.
Vernon Hills 64, Round Lake 43: Darren Hoveydai pumped in 26 points, sinking 8 field goals and going 9 of 10 from the foul line, as the Cougars won the North Suburban Prairie Division game on their home floor.
Stephen Curry and Jarrett Wood added 8 points apiece for Vernon Hills (10-7, 5-2).
Round Lake (5-13, 1-6) was led by Juddon Carter with 19 points, including five 3-pointers.
Stevenson 64, Zion-Benton 52: In a makeup of Friday’s North Suburban Lake game that was postponed, the Patriots snapped their six-game losing steak.
Freshman guard Jalen Brunson scored 21 points (two 3-pointers) to lead Stevenson (11-7, 4-3). Mike Fleming added 11, and Colby Cashaw had 9.
Zion-Benton got a game-high 22 points from Malik Yarbrough.
Grayslake Central 63, Johnsburg 59 (OT): The Rams escaped with the overtime victory to maintain their hold of first place in the Fox Valley Fox Division.
Grayslake Central improved to 13-5 and 5-0 with its fifth win in a row.
