Vernon Hills police chief to retire

Vernon Hills Police Chief Mark Fleischhauer has announced his retirement after a nearly 40-year career in law enforcement. A former deputy chief in Palatine, Fleischhauer began his tenure in Vernon Hills in April 2000. His last day will be June 11, and in coming months the village plans to celebrate his career. Tuesday, the village board hired GovHR USA, a Northbrook-based public management consulting firm, to coordinate the recruitment and selection process at a not-to-exceed cost of $26,000. Village Manager John Kalmar will recommend a candidate(s) to Mayor Roger Byrne, who will appoint a replacement with the advice and consent of the village board. A new chief is expected to be appointed by the end of April.
