Chesterton man dies in motorcycle crash fleeing police stop

CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) - Police in northwest Indiana say a Chesterton man died when his motorcycle crashed while he was fleeing police.

Indiana State Police say 48-year-old Michael James Jozwiak died in the crash late Wednesday on U.S. 20 near Interstate 94 in Porter County. Authorities say a Porter County Sheriff's Department deputy tried to stop the motorcycle on U.S. 20 for a traffic violation when Jozwiak fled.

Police say the motorcycle lost control on U.S. 20 west bound, was ejected and landed on a highway ramp. Authorities say Jozwiak wasn't wearing a helmet. They say CPR was given until an ambulance arrived and Jozwiak was taken to Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso where he was pronounced dead. A toxicology report is pending.
