South Bend lawyer disbarred by Supreme Court for misconduct

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A former South Bend lawyer has been disbarred after the Indiana Supreme Court found he stole money from clients and lied to disciplinary officials.

The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1Y8dgRH ) that the Supreme Court determined that Elton D. Johnson's misconduct dates to at least 2010, the year he was admitted to practice law in Indiana.

Authorities say that in several instances Johnson charged thousands of dollars for faulty work or no work at all. They say he withdrew money from client accounts without paperwork, refused refunds when fired, and lied when questioned by disciplinary officials.

Lucy Mundia, whose 6-year-old daughter was murdered by the girl's father in 2013, complained Johnson botched her attempt to sue St. Joseph County for erroneously releasing the man from jail days before the killing.
