North Suburban Y honored for diversity

The North Suburban YMCA, along with 17 local companies and organizations, has been selected as an honoree of the inaugural Daily Herald Diversity in Business Awards. The Diversity in Business Awards honor those who have shown exceptional commitment to promoting practices that advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace, in business leadership, and in bolstering equality across all areas of diversity, including age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race and religion.

"We are so grateful to be honored with a Diversity in Business Award. The NSYMCA recognizes that a diverse and inclusive organization is foundational to developing and engaging everyone in the community. Together we work to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity and compassion," said Kathy Fielding, CEO of the North Suburban YMCA. "Our focus is on offering enriching programs and tools that help residents become healthier, more connected, and confident, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive." The honorees will also be profiled in a special publication of the Daily Herald Business Ledger on Monday, September 13. Grand addition

In July builders broke ground on a new, 29,000 square-foot performing arts center on the campus of Loyola Academy in Wilmette.

Designed by Krueck Sexton Partners with fellow Chicago firm Valenti Builders serving as general contractor, the $25.76 million Loyola Academy Center for the Performing Arts will form a new campus quadrangle and outdoor plaza that will function as an open-air performance space and a general gathering place for the Loyola community.

Inside a 125-foot, undulating curved glass wall will be a lobby and gallery space leading to the 565-seat Leemputte Family Theater, which will offer a balcony, orchestra pit, fly tower and premier lighting and production technologies.

Next to the theater will be rehearsal and staging areas, a green room, makeup and dressing rooms, and a scene shop. A student lounge will connect the Loyola Academy Center to the fine arts wing on the east side of campus.

Students from Loyola Academy's American Institute of Architecture contributed to the planning and design process.

Sara Lundgren, a partner with Krueck Sexton, said the all-electric building will use 58% less energy than the average output of local peer institutions.

Construction of the center is expected to be completed by 2022.
