Grayslake history program on sailor killed at Pearl Harbor

The Grayslake Historical Society will host a program at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Grayslake about Herbert Jacobson, a sailor from Grayslake who was killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941. Grayslake attorney Rob Smyth will speak in the Community Room of the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum, 164 Hawley St. Jacobson, known as Bert, lived on Park Avenue in Grayslake. The 20-year-old was assigned to the USS Oklahoma, which sank during the attack. The ship was raised in 1943, and the bodies, including Jacobson's, are buried in a mass grave in the Punch Bowl Cemetery in Hawaii, Smyth said. Recent advancements in DNA technology make it possible the bodies can be identified for proper burial, he said. Refreshments will be served. For more information, email ChaRenehan@aol.com.
