Garbage truck driver cited for rollover onto car south of Woodfield

The driver of a garbage truck that flipped on its side and landed onto most of another vehicle in Schaumburg Tuesday afternoon has been cited for driving with defective brakes and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Leonard Jarc, 59, of Harvard is a driver for Groot in Elk Grove Village, Schaumburg police Sgt. Christy Lindhurst said.

His truck flipped over on Higgins Road west of Martingale Road, at the ramp to enter eastbound I-290/Route 53, at 1 p.m. after he took evasive action when he found he was unable to stop due to a mechanical problem with the brakes, according to the police investigation.

Lindhurst said Jarc was cited because drivers assume full responsibility for the vehicles they're operating being in good working order.

Both Jarc and the 77-year-old Elk Grove Village man driving the vehicle the garbage truck landed on were taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village for treatment of minor injuries.

Though the initial call came in as a potential extrication, a passer-by was able to help both drivers get out of the vehicles before police and paramedics arrived, Lindhurst said.

The on-ramp to southbound Route 53 was closed while crews worked to clean up the crash. But the scene was cleared and the on-site investigation completed by 4 p.m.
