Bears' Nagy on heated sideline exchange with Trubisky: 'That's just today's world'
In this week's breathless dissection of every step Mitch Trubisky and Matt Nagy take together, it's time to look at a sideline exchange between the two that was caught on the "Monday Night Football" telecast immediately preceding only the Bears' second third-down conversion of the evening and two plays prior to Trubisky's first touchdown of 2019 in Monday night's victory over Washington.
Nagy is caught on film offering a few choice words for his quarterback - rhymes with "cut the duck up" - who, despite beginning the game 10-of-14, was undoubtedly erratic, already leaving a potential touchdown on the field a few plays earlier on a missed hookup to a streaking Anthony Miller.
It's important to note that these exchanges happen frequently in the NFL and are often constructive - as you'll soon read Nagy and Trubisky thought this one was. But from the same team whose previous full-time starting quarterback, Jay Cutler, had his body language analyzed relentlessly, how could we not report on the first - wait for it - known potty language Nagy has directed at Cutler's replacement?
"I have a little bit of a heated side to me at times, and I think there's nothing wrong with that, but Mitch does, too," Nagy explained. "That's just today's world. That's probably not the first and last time that's gone on between a head coach and quarterback. Nothing's personal. It's just in the middle of the game, just us going at it and you guys got a taste of it."
Nagy noted the irony of the exchange being caught on film in Washington, where his former Chiefs quarterback, Alex Smith, would be the starter had he not suffered a career-threatening broken leg last year.
"You want to go call Alex up and talk to him and ask him how many of those we've had," he said. "It happens. There's a difference, though, between it being personal and being task-related. ... If we didn't care, I would've never had that conversation with him."
Trubisky might go about his own task of leading a bit differently, but he said he enjoyed seeing the fire from his coach, who certainly got his attention because the quarterback was markedly sharper afterward, completing 15 of his final 17 attempts, including all three touchdowns.
"I love it. I got fired up. That's what you want from your head coach," Trubisky said. "You want passion, and it wasn't anything malicious, we were just on the same page and we were getting fired up and we were just communicating and he definitely got his point across and I love to see passion out of my head coach."
Trubisky, who, coincidentally or not, made his best throw to that point of the night on the next play, also pointed out that the offense punctuated that drive with its long awaited first score through the air, reaffirming that the animated conversation was much ado about nothing.
Irrespective of how his embattled quarterback plays in the future, Nagy vowed that it won't be their last tense conversation.

Nagy wasn't the only Bear unwittingly caught on a video Monday night that wouldn't earn a PG rating if it were submitted to the MPAA. Tarik Cohen mistakenly streamed live to his Instagram footage from the Bears' celebratory locker room that included Kyle Long completely naked in front of his locker in the background.
Cohen clearly broke the NFL's postgame social media policy stating that interviews must be conducted beforehand, but did he break the trust of his teammate?
"I apologized because it wasn't a joke," Cohen said. It was something that was unintentional, but it's my fault. I shouldn't have been on social media in the locker room."
Cohen, one of the more fun personalities in the Bears locker room, took ownership of his mistake and took it on himself to apologize to Long and Nagy.
"'Monday Night Football,' emotions are high. I'd say intelligence as a whole in locker room after a win is probably pretty low," Long said. "It's unfortunate. I love Tarik. Tarik knows - we know - what happened and I feel like we've handled it really well. Tarik's my guy."
Credit Long, a prolific social media poster in his own right, for taking the high road and having some fun with the matter.
"I thought I looked pretty lean. I thought my butt looked good," he said with a big smile."
