Safety Tips for Building Owners and Managers this Holiday Season
'Tis the season for decking the halls, rocking around the tree and building frosty the snowman; in the midst of all the holiday cheer - building owners and managers should be aware of safety tips to keep their property, employees and tenants safe.
Candle Safety: More than one-third of fires in the U.S. result from unattended or abandoned candles. Another 25-percent occur because a candle was too close to something combustible, such as curtains or paper. While holiday candles can bring the nostalgic scents of the season into any dwelling, individuals must remember that before leaving the building, all candles should be blown out. A few other tips include:
• Candles should have protective, non-combustible shades or globes around them, and be placed a minimum of four feet away from flammable materials.
• Do not allow candles to burn within two inches of the holder.
• Do not leave candles unattended.
Holiday Light Safety: Not all extension cords are created equal. Ordinary extension cords are not rated for outdoor use, as they have a thinner casing and less insulation than outdoor rated cords. If they are used outside, it can lead to overheating or exposure to moisture, which can cause a fire. When buying an extension cord, look for information on the packaging stating whether the cord is intended for indoor or outdoor use.
Holiday Tree Safety: Both real and artificial trees can create an increased risk for causing a fire. Nearly half of these fires are caused by defective lighting, including electrical cords and plugs. If you choose to display a tree in a building, remember:
• When purchasing an artificial tree, choose one that is labeled as flame-retardant.
• For natural trees, select the freshest-looking tree available. Freshness can be tested by gently using the thumb and forefinger to pull a branch toward the body. A few needles should come off during this process if the tree is fresh.
• Tree stands should be sturdy so there is less of a chance for them to tip over.
• Place the tree at least three feet away from heat sources, system air registers and fireplaces.
• Position the tree near an electrical outlet to minimize the use of extension cords.
• Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets.
• Ensure natural trees have sufficient water to keep them moist; properly dispose of them when they become dry because they will more easily catch fire.
Space Heater Safety: If an electric space heater is used, choose heaters that shut off automatically. The most important rule to keep in mind when operating a space heater is to give them space; at least three feet on all sides. Other tips include:
• Do not use an extension cord with a space heater.
• Inspect the electrical cord for damage before each use.
• Do not use a space heater in an area where it can come in contact with water, such as a bathroom.
