North Suburban YMCA Community Gallery Celebrates Five Years as Local Art Showcase
Over 35 local artists will join forces for a special exhibit in honor of the North Suburban YMCA's 50th anniversary and the fifth anniversary of the Y's Community Gallery. Open through the end of November, the show includes at least two pieces created by artists who have been past participants in the Community Gallery program. Friends and art enthusiasts are invited to meet the artists at a public reception at the Y, 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook, on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
The Y launched the Community Gallery in 2013 to provide a platform for talented artists living and working in the suburbs. Each month features a new individual or organization, covering an enormous range of genres, media, and experience levels over the last five years. In most cases, the artwork is available for purchase, with the artist donating a portion of proceeds to the YMCA's Visual Art programs.
One of the participating artists at the anniversary event will be painter Terry Luc, who presented the very first Community Gallery exhibit. "I'm happy to come back to the YMCA's Community Gallery and see what a success it has become since my first show five years ago," notes Luc. "The YMCA has provided a great platform for local artists to share their work with the wider community. I'm looking forward to being part of the anniversary exhibit alongside so many creative and talented people."
"We are excited to welcome back so many of our favorite artists for our Community Gallery anniversary," says Cathie Winnie, NSYMCA Visual Arts Director. "Over the last five years, we've been proud to feature well-known individuals as well as younger students and adults who are discovering their unknown potential. We hope the community will come by to enjoy the variety and quality of art on display, and possibly find something special for their own homes."
The NSYMCA is celebrating its anniversary with special 50th Anniversary initiatives: "2 Seconds 2 Long," a children's swim safety partnership with local schools; integrated health initiatives like the new Diabetes Prevention and Enhance®Fitness Arthritis Management programs; Social Responsibility projects; S.T.E.A.M. youth education opportunities; and other goals to advance the Y for the next 50 years.
