Boys volleyball: Schaumburg, Conant advance at Lake Park
Eleventh-seeded Schaumburg came up with a 25-13, 25-13 victory over No. 10 Streamwood at Lake Park on Monday to earn a spot against top boys volleyball sectional seed Lake Park at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Dan Kaszuba had a team-high 7 kills and 6 digs for the Saxons, while Sam Smith had 15 assists and Nic Lazarevic was 18-for-20 serving with 4 aces.
In the second matchup at Lake Park on Monday, No. 8 seed Conant topped No. 12 Hoffman Estates 25-20, 25-12 to earn a 6:30 p.m. Tuesday matchup against South Elgin.
at Prospect: Elk Grove advanced to regional semifinal play by topping Northside Prep 25-10, 25-21. Kevin Braceros (9 kills), Shivam Patel (4) and Connor Emmerich (4) led the attack for the Grens, while Ed Gonzalez had 19 assists and Anthony Prochenski came up with a team-best 15 digs. Elk Grove next meets No. 4 sectional seed Evanston at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The host Knights also advanced easily, topping Christian Heritage Academy 25-6, 25-12. Next up for Prospect is No. 5 seed Loyola at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
at Glenbrook North: Rolling Meadows had no trouble with its first-round playoff opponent, topping CICS/Northtown 25-11, 25-8.
Top contributors for the Mustangs included Tommy Murphy (11 kills on 14-for-15 hitting), Kyle Kornblum (5 kills) and Logan Reese (4 kills) and Marc Quezada (8 digs). Kornblum was also 16-for-16 serving with 2 aces, and Murphy served 2 aces and had a team-best 2 blocks.
The Mustangs advance to a 6:30 p.m. Tuesday regional semifinal contest against No. 6 seed St. Viator at 6:30 p.m.
at Waukegan: Nineteenth-seeded Wheeling advanced to regional semifinal play with a 25-23, 25-26 decision over the host Bulldogs in play-in action.
Wheeling (7-27) got 6 kills from Tyler LaRosa, 15 digs and 18 assists from Kyle Bagarella and a 13-for-13 at the service effort from Kevin Burgess.
The Wildcats face No. 2 sectional seed Lake Zurich at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, before the matchup between No. 7 Palatine and No. 10 Warren.
at Buffalo Grove: Fremd advanced to a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday matchup against No. 3 seed Deerfield by handling Grayslake Central 25-17, 25-11.
In the second Tuesday matchup at BG, the host Bison will meet No. 11 seed Zion-Benton, which ousted Grayslake North 25-7, 25-12.
at Niles North: No. 15 seed Maine West earned an appearance against No. 2 seed Hersey at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday by topping No. 18 Fenton 25-20, 25-15. The other Tuesday matchup at Niles North will be Maine South vs. Niles North at 6:30 p.m.
