Northbrook in 60 seconds

District 30 retirement

There is an uncontested race for positions on the Northbrook/Glenview School District 30 Board of Education, but there will be a person stepping down.

That is board President Ursula Sedlak, who will retire from the board in May. She was first elected to the board in 2013.

She's a former manager for a building products company and, after 14 years, she left that job to care for the two children she has with her husband, Brian.

Ursula Sedlak served in multiple capacities with the District 30 board, from the committees charged with making policy to Character Counts. She's currently on the Building & Grounds Committee, the Parent Support Committee and the Citizens' Curriculum Advisory Committee.

Sedlak arrived as board president after a long history of volunteerism, including being a den leader with both Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts troops. She volunteered at both Wescott and Maple schools, serving on upper and lower parent-teacher organization boards at Wescott, then becoming its PTO president.

District 30 board Vice President Nancy Artz, who joined the board in 2015, will succeed Sedlak as president.

Signs

Northbrook has been updating its zoning code about signs, but the village has released guidance this political season.

The village will not regulate content of any sign, and there's no limit as to how long a political sign may be posted.

Individual political signs may not exceed 6 square feet, applicable to both residential and nonresidential properties. Any number of political signs may be placed anywhere on private property without a permit or fee. However, signs are prohibited on public property, and will be removed by village personnel.

The sole exception is at publicly-owned polling places during early voting or voting day, on April 6. Those signs are regulated by the Illinois Election Code.

For specific questions about political signs, reach Chan Yu, Northbrook deputy director of Development & Planning Services, by email at chan.yu@northbrook.il.us, or by phone at (847) 664-4057.
