Giolito flounders in second start of season for White Sox

When Lucas Giolito issued a leadoff walk Saturday, it was actually a good omen.

In his season debut at Kansas City last Sunday, he did the same thing. Giolito proceeded to retire the next 19 hitters until the Royals' Alex Gordon ended his no-hit bid with a one-out single in the seventh inning.

History did not repeat itself in the White Sox's 9-2 loss to the Mariners at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Giolito (1-1) lasted just 4⅓ innings against Seattle and allowed 5 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks.

"I think I started to come out of my mechanics, come out of my delivery a little bit as the game went on," Giolito said. "Walked too many guys, can't do that. And then heaters (fastballs) up over the middle, they got me on those."

Giolito held the Mariners scoreless over the first two innings before unraveling.

"A little bit of a mix," Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "I know he got a little deep in some counts, had a few well-struck balls. We were trying to get him through 5, obviously that didn't work. All in all, not his best and not his worst."

Jose Abreu and Tim Anderson hit solo home runs for the White Sox. They both have 3 on the season.

Santana sighting:

While he's not on the White Sox's 25-man roster yet, Ervin Santana was in the clubhouse before Saturday's game against Seattle.

Barring an unexpected change, Santana is going to move into the Sox's rotation and start Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay at Guaranteed Rate Field.

"He threw a side today," manager Rick Renteria said. "Assuming everything is well, we're hoping that he'll be a part of this, obviously. But there are still some things to be determined. We'll just say he's looking good right now."

Santana signed a minor league contract with the White Sox on Feb. 22.

Before the 2015 season, Santana agreed to a four-year, $55 million contract with Minnesota. He was 16-8 with a 3.28 ERA in 2017, finishing seventh in Cy Young Award voting.

Last year with the Twins, Santana was limited to 5 starts by an injury to his right middle finger. He was 0-1 with an 8.03 ERA.

Frigid start:

Daniel Palka's dreary start to the season continued in Saturday's loss to Seattle.

The right fielder was 0-for-3 with 2 strikeouts. Palka is 0-for-21 with 9 strikeouts for the year.

"An aggressive young man trying to do probably a little bit too much," manager Rick Renteria said. "Still chasing, getting outside of his own zone. Today he actually looked a lot better in his work. It's just something he's going to have to take from the work field to the games."

Burr's big day:

The White Sox were happy following Friday's 10-8 win over the Mariners in their first home game of the season.

Ryan Burr took it to another level.

"It's something you always dream and think about," the reliever said.

Burr pitched 1⅓ scoreless innings against Seattle and won his first major-league game.

"The coolest part was my father (Scott) was here and I saw him up in the stands," Burr said. "I saw his reaction, it was pretty cool. He had his hands straight up in the air. He was super happy, which made it a little bit emotional for me, but it was awesome."
