Giolito, Delmonico spark White Sox's 6-4 win over Red Sox

Carlos Rodon is out, possibly for the rest of the season, after being placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with left elbow inflammation.

On the needed bright side for the White Sox, Lucas Giolito is back in the rotation.

After missing his last two starts with a strained left hamstring, Giolito came off the IL and started the opening of a four-game series against the Red Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.

On a chilly night, Giolito kept the White Sox in the game while allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Trailing 4-3 with one out in the ninth inning, Nicky Delmonico hit a 3-run homer off Ryan Brasier to lift the White Sox to a 6-4 win.

"Felt awesome," said Delmonico, who joined the Sox from Class AAA Charlotte on April 22 and was 3-for-17 before the clutch homer. "We just compete. I love coming to the field and playing with these guys, We don't give up."

Giolito also had 7 strikeouts while throwing 98 pitches.

"Felt great," Giolito said. "Being on the IL is not fun, I never want to go back. No leg soreness or anything with my hamstring. My pitch count went a little high early, but I was able to battle through it."

James McCann hit a 2-run homer in the first inning to give the White Sox the early lead, and Jose Rondon's RBI single in the sixth tied the game at 3.

Anderson honored:

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson batted .375 with 5 doubles, 6 home runs, 18 RBI and was 10-for-10 stealing bases in March and April.

On Thursday, Anderson was named American League player of the month, the first Sox player to earn the honor since Jose Abreu did it twice in 2014.

"It was a great accomplishment," Anderson said. "Hopefully, I can keep it going, continue to work hard and keep getting better every day. I never thought of this. I never knew it would be like this, but I'm enjoying the ride."

Minor doings:

Class AA Birmingham outfielder Luis Robert was voted the White Sox's minor-league player of the month for April on Thursday. Class A Kannapolis left-hander Konnor Pilkington earned the nod as pitcher of the month.

Promoted to Birmingham on Tuesday, the 21-year-old Robert batted .453 with 5 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, 24 RBI, a .512 on-base percentage and .920 slugging percentage over 19 games with A Winston-Salem.

Pilkington, 21, was 1-0 with a 2.01 ERA in 4 starts at Kannapolis. The Sox's third-round draft pick last year, Pilkington had 34 strikeouts in 22⅓ innings.

Robert is 0-for-6 with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in his first two games for Birmingham.
