Law Firm Offers Assistance with Rare Illinois Department of Revenue Tax Amnesty Program
The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) recently announced a tax amnesty program for taxpayers who have a delinquent balance. The program will wipe clean all penalties and interest on the debt, and will also eliminate any possible criminal charges if appropriate conditions are met.
Local tax attorney Joshua Nesser of Lavelle Law said an offering of this type from IDOR has only happened a few times in the past and provides a very positive opportunity for many taxpayers with an outstanding balance with the state.
"The elimination of all penalties and interest takes away a very significant burden for many of those who are in arrears," said Nesser. "This presents a very rare opportunity to get back on proper footing and reduces major financial concerns for many."
Nesser said there are several conditions that must be met, including payment in full of the entire tax balance owed between October 1 and November 15 of this year. The program covers past due amounts related to periods ending between mid-2011 and mid-2018 and includes debts associated with most types of taxes, including income, withholding, and sales taxes.
"The program is pretty far reaching in that it is inclusive of taxpayers who have yet to file returns for the amnesty period, are currently under audit, are working with a private collection agency, are currently before IDOR's Board of Appeals, or are party to a state tax administrative hearing," Nesser said.
He advised that anyone wanting to take advantage of the amnesty program work with a qualified tax attorney to verify eligibility and to ensure that payments are made properly so as not to void the benefits offered by IDOR.
"Anyone with a tax debt relative to the Illinois Department of Revenue should act quickly to gain the full benefit of this important offering during the amnesty period."
