Madrigal warming up at Class A Winston-Salem

As Monday's draft nears and the Chicago White Sox likely choose either Cal's Andrew Vaughn or Blessed Trinity (Ga.) High School's C.J. Abrams with the No. 3 overall pick, it's a good time to check in with Nick Madrigal.

Last year, the Sox used the No. 4 overall pick on Madrigal, a star second baseman out of Oregon State.

After a slow start at high Class A Winston-Salem this season, Madrigal has been heating up. Over his last 13 games, the 5-foot-8, 175-pounder is batting .345 with 2 homers, 10 runs scored and 9 stolen bases.

On the season, Madrigal is hitting .279/.351/.391.

"He hit a home run (Wednesday) night, which is good," said Nick Hostetler, the White Sox's amateur scouting director. "I know that's been one of the questions around, the power. The guy still leads all of baseball in contact rate. He makes the most contact of anybody. That's what we drafted him to do.

"We knew he was a contact guy, we knew he was going to play Gold Glove second base. He's done that."

In his first 203 plate appearances with Winston-Salem this season, Madrigal only had 6 strikeouts.

Dynamic duo:

The White Sox's bullpen has become a strength, allowing only 3 earned runs over their last 17 innings.

Alex Colome is a premier closer, and he's been getting plenty of help from Evan Marshall and Aaron Bummer.

Marshall hasn't allowed a run in 11⅓ innings this season and Bummer has given up just 1 earned run in 14⅓ innings.

"Their stuff's pretty good, both of them," manager Rick Renteria said. "They're doing a very nice job. They pick us up in key situations. For Bummer, he's maturing. For Evan, good for him, he's had a long trek and we're really happy for him and for how he's performed."

Good impression:

Welington Castillo was activated off the seven-day concussion list Saturday, ending Seby Zavala's short stay with the Sox.

Before being sent back to Class AAA Charlotte, Zavala was 1-for-9 with 7 strikeouts. The 25-year-old catcher was much more impressive on the defensive side.

"One of the things we have liked is the way he manages the game," manager Rick Renteria said. "Behind the plate, he's been doing a really nice job all the way through and he did a very nice job (Friday)."
