Fishers to spend $14 million for new, larger police station

FISHERS, Ind. (AP) - The growing city of Fishers outside Indianapolis is spending an estimated $14 million to build a new police station.

Fishers had 10,000 people and about 30 police officers about 20 years ago. Now it has nearly 90,000 residents and more than 100 police officers. The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/2fQ2wop ) the officers still work in the same space as they did more than two decades ago. So the city plans to build a 50,000-square-foot, three-story police station next to the current police station, which will be renovated for use as city offices.

Construction should be finished by the fall of next year.

Fishers city officials say the police station's cubicles are squeezed together and the crime lab and patrol divisions are out of space.
