I've seen Vernon Hills from two completely different sets of eyes having owned one of the first homes built in the Hawthorn Club for 20 years and now we live in a town home in New Century Town. I've watched the Village Presidents and boards, both past and present, transform our community from farm fields to a vibrant Village with all the amenities. I was honored to be appointed to the board when a vacancy came up and I am proud to serve all the residents. I have a background in governmental accounting and as an employee of Illinois Department of Transportation I have an in depth understanding the road projects in the area. As a trustee on the Police Pension Board and a volunteer on the 4th of July parade committee I have been able to work closely with our residents and want to continue serving them on the board. What is your opinion of your community's present level of local sales and property taxes? Is the tax just right, too low or too high? Explain. We have been very fortunate to have a Board and Village President that understands the need for economic development. Due directly to their efforts, we do not have a Village property tax and our sales tax rates are low.Rate the efficiency of your town's police and fire coverage. Are the departments well prepared for the next decade? What, if anything, should be changed? Do you have specific public safety concerns? Our police and fire departments are excellent. The Village is directly responsible for the police and the Countryside district is responsible for the fire department. As a Trustee on the Police Pension Board I have had direct contact with the police and found their management to be extremely professional and their programs state of the art.Where, if anywhere, could the current budget be trimmed, and conversely, are there areas the budget does not give enough money to?Having been through a complete budget cycle, I've seen that the village is being successfully managed with a staff that's been reduced over the years to become as lean as it can be. Their professionalism and positive attitudes are the reasons for our success. We are servicing our debt, funding our pension liabilities, partnering with our park and school districts on projects, and have money in the General Fund for contingencies. All this while maintaining a controlled level of growth and serving all of the residents. What is one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet?I would like to see us redoubling our efforts at recycling by offering a voluntary pilot program in curbside collection of food scraps and other items that could be easily composted. We are filling our landfills with materials that, when composted, could be used to enrich our soil. Lake county already has a composting effort going on, see Dirty Jobs on the Lake county website. Oak Park has had a voluntary pilot program going and the resident response has been very positive. We should begin to develop the same type of program. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office? Now that we will be correcting our major roadway bottleneck at 60 and 21 through the Melody Farms development, it's time that we get busy on the project to widen Route 45 through the village. Traffic is horrendous during rush hour and if we prioritize our efforts we can get the project moving faster. Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Bill Gates "â#128;œ He built Microsoft then had a family and now contributes hundreds of millions of dollars through his foundationWhat is the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?There's nothing more important than family. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?I would start to save and invest earlier in life. What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?Accounting and computer programming. They helped me to look at each issue I faced from an analytical standpoint and make structured decisions. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Enjoy your children. Don't miss a game or a dance recital or a play for work. They grow up too fast.
