Cove School Students Display Artwork at North Suburban YMCA
Over 130 young artists from Cove School in Northbrook are participating in a public art show in the North Suburban YMCA's Community Gallery. The exhibit, featuring the work of students in kindergarten through 12th grade, will be on display October 1 through 14, culminating in a reception for artists, family and friends on October 14 at 4:00 p.m. The YMCA is located at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook.
For over 70 years, Cove School has served as a vital stepping-stone in the community, helping students with learning disabilities develop the skills and self-confidence required to successfully transition to community schools or post-secondary education. Cove provides a comprehensive, individualized approach to learning. The school recognizes the complex learning needs of students with learning disabilities and provides the integrated specialized services that contribute greatly to their success.
According to art teacher Laura Silverberg, artistic expression plays an important role in the development of the school's students. "The art program at Cove School is as multifaceted as our school's students are diverse," notes Silverberg. "Through art, our mission is to empower students to find their unique voice and clarify it through an array of differentiated methods. Students are immersed in the arts using a hands-on, student-centered approach with projects designed to utilize recycled items, found materials, and natural artifacts such as wood, stone, and flora. Through this comprehensive and eclectic art program, Cove has established an interdisciplinary academic hub within the school that weaves math, science, and the humanities into art lessons."
The YMCA's Community Gallery showcases the work of artists living in Chicago's northern suburbs in monthly exhibits that are open to the public.
