Sox found success with Lopez/Gonzalez duo

The White Sox had a successful outcome Saturday night when Reynaldo Lopez started against the Cubs and was relieved by Gio Gonzalez.

The duo combined to pitch 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits.

Moving forward, will the Sox stick with the "piggyback" approach?

Lopez is coming back from an extended stay on the injured list due to a sore shoulder, so it is very possible Gonzalez will be ready in the bullpen until he's stretched back out.

"It serves us well," manager Rick Renteria said. "We're very fortunate that we have someone who can slot in right behind him if need be and eat up a few innings."

Gonzalez was signed to a one-year contract last offseason and initially slotted in as a starter. The 34-year-old lefty has pitched in 6 games this season, and 4 of them have been starts.

"It's still hard for me," Gonzalez said of pitching relief. "I still ask guys in the bullpen, especially left-handed pitchers, how do I get ready? I was warming up from the first inning until Lopey was done. I have to ask those questions. I had a lot of help from those guys in the bullpen, guiding me."
