Deputy fatally shoots man outside suburban Indianapolis home
AVON, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who charged at him with a knife in the backyard of a suburban Indianapolis home.
The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon in a subdivision near the town of Avon just west of Indianapolis.
Hendricks County sheriff's Capt. Amanda Goings says two reserve deputies went to the house to check on the welfare of a man. She says the deputies encountered the man in the backyard after no one answered the front door.
Goings says the man pulled out a knife and ignored orders to drop it before charging one of the deputies, who shot the man once. She says the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man's identity wasn't immediately released.
