One dog dies, two rescued in Fox Lake house fire
A dog was killed and a house was destroyed by fire in Fox Lake, authorities said.
Fox Lake Fire Deputy Chief Ed Lescher said the fire, reported at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the 0-100 block of Hillcrest Avenue, started in a first floor bedroom and spread to a neighboring bedroom and the attic before being knocked down by firefighters.
The fire was spotted by a neighbor, who called 911 for assistance. It was under control within 10 minutes, Lescher said.
Two dogs were rescued by firefighters in adjoining bedrooms during a sweep of the residence, he said. They were taken by the homeowners to a Grayslake animal hospital where they were treated.
A third dog succumbed to the smoke and was pronounced dead at the scene, Lescher said.
"Despite the best efforts of firefighters who performed CPR on the canine, the animal did not survive," he said.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, he said, but it was not suspicious in nature.
The fire caused $75,000 in damage to the house, which was deemed uninhabitable, Lescher said.
Fire departments from Round Lake, Spring Grove, Antioch, and Lake Villa assisted the Fox Lake Fire Protection District at the scene and with station coverage, Lescher said.
