Kane clarifies comments following Kyle Beach disclosure

Patrick Kane wasn't happy with how he responded to questions about the Blackhawks' sexual abuse scandal last week.

"I feel bad (about) the last time I talked," Kane said after scoring 3 goals in the Hawks' 5-1 win Monday over Ottawa.

In his interview last week Kane said he knew Stan Bowman "as a great man" and that the former general manager "did a lot for me personally."

Those comments, and others by Kane and captain Jonathan Toews, drew the fans' ire on the day that Kyle Beach identified himself as the player abused by Brad Aldrich in 2010. Kane had not seen Beach's emotional interview on TSN, but has since watched it.

"It's obviously very emotional, watching and even reading through the investigation, just some disturbing details," Kane said. "Obviously, I put my personal experience with management ahead of the way Kyle was treated by them. When you do that, don't want to diminish or overshadow anything Kyle went through with our organization.

"Listen, it takes incredible courage and pride for him to come forward and deal with what he's dealt with. We're all thinking about him, too."

Bowman and former vice president of hockey operations Al MacIsaac are no longer with the organization.

Kane, who hung out with Beach quite a bit during Beach's first training camp in 2008, said he would try to connect at some point.

"Just want the best for him and his life moving forward," Kane said. "(I'll see) if he's willing to talk or wants to reach out, that you're here for him. It's been 11 years, and it's a lot to deal with for a long time."

Off the schneid

It took 10 games, but the Hawks (1-7-2) finally won their first game Monday. The biggest positives for coach Jeremy Colliton's team were that they scored 4 goals at even strength and Marc-Andre Fleury turned away 29 shots in net. The Hawks have allowed just 2 goals in their last two games.

The 'W' was a big relief for everyone.

"No question," Colliton said. "We're all human. You look at the standings and we understand where we're at. We've got to put points on the board. Everyone believes in the team we have and the players we have and there's more there. But when you're not breaking through and getting results, it's hard."

It won't get any easier over the next week, though, as the Hawks host Carolina (8-0-0), travel to Winnipeg (4-2-2), then host pesky Nashville (4-4-0) and Pittsburgh (3-3-2).

This and that

• Coach Jeremy Colliton didn't have much of an update on injured defensemen Wyatt Kalynuk and Caleb Jones and forward Tyler Johnson. He did say none will play against Carolina Wednesday, and that Kalynuk is the closest of the three to returning. He is eligible to come off LTIR Friday.

• Forward Jujhar Khaira, defenseman Riley Stillman and coaches Marc Crawford and Jimmy Waite are out of COVID protocol.

• The Hawks came to terns with defenseman Louis Crevier on a three-year entry-level deal that runs through the 2023-24 season and carries an $850,833 cap hit. Crevier was taken in the seventh round of the 2020 draft.
