Report: Bears cornerback Artie Burns tears ACL
Bears cornerback Artie Burns went down with a left knee injury Tuesday in practice, according to head coach Matt Nagy. Per a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, Burns tore his ACL, likely meaning he will be out for the season.
The Bears signed Burns to a one-year contract in the offseason and drafted Jaylon Johnson in the second round in order to revamp the cornerback position following the departure of Prince Amukamara.
The team has a true position battle ongoing during training camp to determine who will start at cornerback opposite Pro Bowl corner Kyle Fuller.
Burns' injury provides an opening for the rookie Johnson. The Bears drafted Johnson high, indicating they think he can start at the position. Whether he's ready to start now, without a true NFL preseason, is another question.
The Bears also have Kevin Toliver and Buster Skrine vying for the position. Both Toliver and Skrine saw limited playing time last year.
