Bears add former NFL safety Mike Adams as assistant coach
The Bears have hired Mike Adams as assistant defensive backs coach, the team announced Tuesday. Adams played safety in the NFL for 16 seasons with six teams, including two Pro Bowl seasons.
Adams will join secondary coach Deshea Townsend coaching the Bears' defensive backs. This will be Adams' first coaching role.
Adams made a career for himself in the NFL after going undrafted out of Delaware in 2004. Adams and Bears head coach Matt Nagy were teammates at Delaware for two seasons in 1999 and 2000. Adams was a co-captain for Delaware's 2003 NCAA national championship team.
As a player, Adams played for the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans. He was a starter for 10 seasons and appeared in 228 games, most ever by a former Delaware player. He played in 10 playoff games, including Super Bowl 48, which his Broncos lost to the Seattle Seahawks. Adams earned Pro Bowl bids in 2014 and 2015 as a member of the Colts.
Adams joins a revamped Bears defensive coaching staff under defensive coordinator Sean Desai. The Bears promoted Bill Shuey to outside linebackers coach, they also hired Bill McGovern as inside linebackers coach and Chris Rumph as defensive line coach.
