Girls volleyball: Winning record for Wheeling to close regular season

Wheeling's girls volleyball team celebrated its Senior Night by finishing its regular season with a winning record.

The Wildcats (18-17) did it against one of the winningest teams in the area.

Led by senior Kamila Staniszewski's 9 kills and 17 digs, Wheeling rallied for a 13-25, 25-15, 25-23 triumph over visiting St. Viator (24-10).

The Lions have won their most matches since 2008 (29-10) under coach Charlie Curtin.

Nosa Igiehon added 5 kills for the Wildcats, followed by Ellie Welter (3) and Nicole Nguyen (3). Remy Jankowski, Jessica Janowski, Rugile Jaciunas and Jazmyn Veloso each had 1.

Velsoso, the Wildcats junior libero who now has 23 kill for the season, also served 3 aces.

As usual, Janowski set the attack. She was 53-of-53 with 19 assists and also collected 7 digs.

Welter also had 3 blocks and Igiehon 2. Nguyen served 2 aces and Emily LaCaesye and Grace Zambrano each had 1. Olivia Walker had 2 digs and Lupe Bucio 1.
