Boys volleyball: Stevenson outlasts Lake Forest

Leo Chen and Gavin Meng pounded 12 and 11 kills, respectively, and Stevenson's boys volleyball team outlasted host Lake Forest 27-25, 17-25, 30-28 in a North Suburban Conference opener on Wednesday night.

Justin Ross added 7 kills for the Patriots (7-1), while Will Sorenson dished out 26 assists. Chen also served 3 aces. Meng and Andrii Yerokhin delivered a pair of aces each. Matt Cliffer contributed 4 kills and 3 assisted blocks, and Alex Bian had 3 kills and 8 digs.

Zion-Benton d. Mundelein: Eric Morales had 10 kills for the visiting Mustangs, who fell 23-25, 25-19, 25-18 in their North Suburban opener.

Marc Rey added 6 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces for Mundelein (4-4). The Mustangs' other contributors included Abram Nazario (6 kills), Martin Carrillo (2 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces), Ben Arebalo (18 digs) and Steven Miritello (25 assists).

St. Viator d. Vernon Hills: Derrick Jones' 10 kills and 2 aces couldn't prevent the host Cougars from dropping a 25-17, 25-21 decision on Senior Night in nonconference action.

Vernon Hills (3-4) also received 5 kills from Drake DeBoer, 7 digs from Sammy Adkisson and 17 assists from Jonathan Wallach.

"We got all our healthy seniors out there, but we never found a good rhythm," Cougars coach Chris Curry said. "Viator just scrambled and hustled better than we did."

Will Heneghan had 11 kills, 3 aces, 3 blocks and 8 digs for St. Viator (3-4).

Lake Forest Academy d. Grayslake Central: Austin Rockel had 6 kills and Nick Murphy put down five, as the host Rams fell 23-25, 25-19, 25-20 in nonconference play.

Javier Ortiz had 13 assists for Grayslake Central, which also got 9 digs from Jameson Loeffler and 2 blocks apiece from Isaac Dahlstrom and Emmanuel Eugene.
