Northbrook Woman's Club/Foundation holds food drive for local pantry

On Saturday, Jan. 23, the Northbrook Woman's Club/Foundation braved the cold and hosted a food donation drive to support the Northfield Township Food Pantry.

Their efforts brought in $790 in cash donations and more than 115 bags of groceries that were delivered to the pantry on Monday Jan. 25. The much-needed items included juice boxes, juice, beef-based soups, beef- based side dishes, dried beans, canned chicken and more.

"We are so grateful for these donations right now, specifically for the much-needed items," said Jill Brickman, Northfield Township supervisor. "Need for pantry services continues to grow, so having organizations like the Northbrook Woman's Club support our efforts really makes a difference."

This year's event also took into consideration social distancing and COVID restrictions. To make it a bit easier on donors, they offered a "drive-through" donation drop-off. During the scheduled drop-off times, donors were welcomed and asked to pop their trunk so they didn't need to get out of their cars.

"I am so proud to be a part of this organization," said Miha Ugarcovici, Northbrook Woman's Club/Foundation member. "We were so surprised at how many people supported our efforts and came out in this blistery cold. It shows that our community has a giving spirit no matter what."

In addition to community and member support, about 15 bags came from The Northbrook Woman's Club/Foundation junior board. The junior board has about 50 female members ages 15-18 years.

The Northbrook Woman's Club/Foundation has been in existence since 1955, and the club, and later the foundation, have raised and donated more than $1 million for college scholarships and countless grants to local service organizations.
