Bears' Fangio denies reports he's leaving team
Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on Wednesday repeatedly denied a story quoting unnamed sources who said he would not be back next year.
Asked at his weekly news conference if he was on his way out, Fangio said: "No. That wasn't written by anyone in this room, was it? You guys know what's going on. No.
"It gives you guys a bad name. He's one of your colleagues, and irresponsible reporting doesn't shine well for all of you, and that's too bad because I enjoy talking to you guys."
Fangio said he wasn't aware of the story until Fox told him about it.
"He was all nervous about it," Fangio said, "so I said, 'Don't worry about it.'"
Fangio said Fox was nervous, "Because it wasn't true, and he thought I might take it the wrong way."
Asked if he expected to remain with the Bears beyond this season, Fangio said: "I do."
The Bears have made huge strides defensively in two years under Fangio, despite a spate of injuries to key players. As Fox pointed out, the defense has improved from 30th in 2014 to No. 7 in total yards allowed and from 31st to 16th in points allowed. Fox also noted the offense has improved from 21st to 16th in total yards while using three quarterbacks.
"I think our staff is tremendous," Fox said. "I couldn't be more proud of our staff. I am very, very pleased with our staff."
Asked specifically about Fangio, Fox said: "I think we get along great."
Asked if he wants Fangio back, Fox said: "I want our whole staff back. Now, whether that proves to be a reality or not, things happen. Guys get jobs, get head-coaching jobs, get chances to advance their careers. Like any of the projection stuff, I just stay away from it."
Injury report:
Wide receivers Marquess Wilson (groin) and Eddie Royal (toe), cornerback Tray Porter (knee) and offensive tackle Mike Adams (back) did not practice.
Wide receiver Josh Bellamy (shoulder), linebacker Jonathan Anderson (hamstring), linebacker Willie Young (knee), safety Adrian Amos (foot) and cornerback Deiondre' Hall (ankle) were limited.
